The New Drip – Kickstarter’s Latest Tool

Kickstarter is for projects, Drip is for people. That’s the message we witnessed on November 15th, when the crowdfunding giants announced their newest tool for creative makers. What are its capabilities? Who can use it?

Quick Backstory

Drip  was created in 2012 as a service allowing fans to support their favourite musicians through subscriptions. The idea was introduced by an independent record label named Ghostly International, known for creators such as Com Truise, Tycho and Gold Panda.

In 2016 the service was close to being shut down. Later though, its creators admitted with relief that they’re becoming a part of (then still green) Kickstarter. New Drip debuted on November 15th this year.

What Exactly is The New Drip?

The New Drip is a tool for artists, designers and creative minds from various fields. Thanks to a special subscription system, that tailors itself to the needs and preferences of every user, creators can gain financial support from fans. Drip can also reward early supporters by giving them a “founding member” status and special rewards. This may encourage subscribers to pledge higher sums of money  and speed up certain projects. The fact that Drip works with Kickstarter, the biggest crowdfunding website on the market, is also a huge advantage.

Focus on Independence

Flattr, Patreon, Steady are just a fraction of all websites offering similar solutions and they’ve already been present for some years. How does The New Drip differ from these apart from the “founding member” idea? It can redirect data, website content, subscribers and pledges to other crowdfunding platforms. The site puts focus on creators and attempts to make them as comfortable as possible. Independence is a key factor here. The authors claim that artists shouldn’t feel limited by their platform of choice.

A Simple Start

If you want to join The New Drip as a creator, just establish your own profile and describe what you’re doing. Inventing some form of supporter rewards is also recommended. These may range from the info about your projects, some results of your work, dedicated content and expanded versions of whatever you’re creating. Authors encourage people to create rewards aimed at interpersonal relations: meetings, backstage presentations etc.

It’s worth mentioning that The New Drip is complementary to Kickstarter. Users of the site can easily support their favourite creators in a brand new environment.
