Volfyirion: Guilds – The Great Card Game Saga Continues

The franchise started by Tabula Games with Mysthea is certainly one of a kind. Merging a variety of genres it spans over five games – all of which explore the very same universe during different time periods and from various standpoints. Plenty of creative mechanics, unique and complex lore paired with beautiful illustrations make the entire franchise stand out a lot.

The newest addition to the series called Volfyirion Guilds is about to launch on Kickstarter on July 7th. How does it play and how does it expand the story? Let’s take a look.

Mysthea Universe

The storyline began with Mysthea, where players explored floating islands and vied for their territories. Icaion focused on the story of the original planet that the islands detached from. The players ventured through it to look for treasures and ancient relics.

Volfyirion took us 60 years into the past and showed a conflict between two powerful houses called Volarees and Rorius. An appearance of a powerful dragon filled them both with fear and… hopes of making him an ally useful to win their long struggle. Volfyirion Guilds begins right after Volfyirion and continues the story while focusing on 5 competing Guilds established by the king to stop house Volarees from growing in power. 

Playing Volfyirion

Volfyirion is quite simple to learn but its mechanics make it quite a deep and interesting card game. It was designed for 2 player competitive matches and it usually doesn’t take too long to complete a single session. Both players control different, opposing guilds and try to destroy cities owned by their rival. 

Deck-building is the central mechanic in Volfyirion and it allows players to customize their own deck to a strategy of their choice. This can involve direct attacks on cities, creating strong card combinations, burning the deck of your opponent or taming the titular dragon and using him to bring the enemy down. Playing each card rewards a player with one of 3 types of points which in return can be used to perform various actions. 

What’s New in Volfyirion Guilds

So what new content and mechanics are we going to get in Volfyirion Guilds? First: there are 110 brand new cards. Some of these cards include new types like Vaults and Agents. Neither of these were available in the original and both make the game much more enjoyable.

Vaults work as guild centers and allow starting your combos faster. There’s a catch though, as the abilities of Vaults unlock only when you lose one of your cities. Meanwhile Agents can help with getting cards in alternative ways while also making the game less luck dependent. 

Even Bigger

Volfyirion Guilds is a stand alone title with enough content to guarantee hours upon hours of fun. Still, those of you who have the previous game or want to get it during the new campaign, should know that both titles can be mixed together to create an even bigger game. With much more abilities and tactics to pick from, this version of Volfyirion can certainly be called the definitive experience. 

One more new mode is the Solo Challenge which allows battling Volfyirion and other dangerous beasts, which the universe created by Tabula Games is famous for. 

Campaign and Promotions

The campaign for Volfyirion is set to launch on July 7th, but before then the team at Tabula Games has prepared plenty of promotions. Some of them are available right now while others will become active during the campaign.

Returning backers of all previous Mysthea universe campaigns will be able to get the original Volfyirion for free with their 46€ or higher pledge. Those who got it last time can also snag the famous dragon miniature for free on the same terms. Early Bird backers can get a box of high quality tokens as a bonus. Also if you’re looking for some fun way to pass the time, the creators have prepared a mini game inspired by the good old Snake on their official website.

All in all Volfyirion Guilds feels great to play and offers enough cards and abilities to make the game endlessly repeatable and addictive. Especially with its fast, 1v1 gameplay and fantastic looks. We cannot wait to finally see the campaign go live!
