FEBRUARY
In the Hall of the Mountain King – February 5th
The game goes live on Kickstarter next week, and will take you to a world ruled by trolls. And finally, instead of slaying these big guys, you’ll be playing as them and rebuilding their long lost underground empire.
Digging tunnels, smashing rocks with hope of finding valuable minerals, and trying to outsmart your equally giant competitors will be vital here. Authors boast about having tons of innovative mechanics in their game – especially the “cascading production” engine idea, where a group of trolls produces additional materials when new ones get hired and placed above them.
Coloma – February 20th
Final Frontier Games (Rise to Nobility, Cavern Tavern) is making their comeback to Kickstarter with Coloma – a game about 1849 Gold Rush in California.
Many gold seekers mean lots of potential customers for local property owners like you. Want to build a saloon where frustrated miners can drown their feelings in a glass of rum? How about hotels, service buildings, bridges or even looking for the shiny ore yourself?
The game is aimed at 1-5 players and has yet another approach to worker placement mechanic. Players pick what they want to do secretly, but actions chosen by too many get weaker. Lots of bluffing and lost friendships are bound to happen. I can’t wait!
Chocolate Factory – February
Board game creators never run out of ideas to create euro-style, economy based titles. Farms, hotels, wineries, microbreweries – the choice is yours. This time, people from Alley Cat Games will let you try the demanding (but aromatic) work of a chocolatier.
Chocolate Factory lets 1-5 players become owners of manufactures, creating all sorts of cocoa based candy in 1920s. The box includes at least 120 deliciously looking meeples shaped like sweets, a bunch of cards representing factory parts and workers, and a conveyor belt made of tiles, that also happens to be one of the key mechanics of the game.
MARCH
Iwari – March 5th
I have a soft spot for ThunderGryph Games, and their approach to board gaming. Previously they made us go to old China, but this year we’ll visit a fictional place called Iwari – inspired by various tribes and cultures from all over the world. The land of Iwari is ruled by mysterious titans and all people live in small, tribe-like groups while trying to survive, and learn about their roots.
Gameplay is based around highly rated Web of Power from 2000, made by the very same designer (Michael Schacht), but got refined a lot. Building tents lets you claim territories, and leads to steady expansion. To become even more powerful you’ll have to carve totems devoted to titans. New additions include everything modern KS backers ask for: from solo mode and co-op to modularity.
And finally: just like all titles from the publisher, the game looks fantastic. Tents, totem parts and cards illustrated (again) by Matthew Mizak all feel as stylish as it gets.
Imnia – 2nd half of March 2019
A debut title by Black Sea Interactive is a worker placement game that goes against most trends in the genre. Despite a big board set in the middle with its own set of actions, players build their personalized towns.
Each person can place workers on his or her building cards, but when they pay with influence, they may place them on the constructions made in the villages owned by competitors. Influence is vital to winning though, so actions like that need to be considered thoroughly.
We wrote about the game recently, so if you’re curious, check out our article from last week. Lots of info about mechanics and a tip about a certain giveaway. Check it out here.
