The Most Successful Halloween Campaigns

Kickstarter and Halloween – amusing mix, isn’t it? Is it going to get scary today? Let’s check out… This time we’ll show you 3 (or actually 4) most generously funded campaigns related to a very special day in late October.

The Last Halloween: Book 1

The Last Halloween is a series of internet comics published by Abby Howard. After gathering a hefty amount of readers the author decided to fulfill her wish and release a book filled with short stories. That’s why she choose to use Kickstarter.

In the world of Howard each human has a monster counterpart. These dangerous creatures live in an alternate dimension. That’s why people never see them. On a certain Halloween night though, everything changes. The world can only be saved by a 10 year old Mona and four of her unusual companions.

What made fans fall in love with the works of Howard? The ability to build tension, refreshing sense of humour and atmospheric drawings. In her comics we can visit amazing lands inhabited by bizarre creatures. Lots of fun and shivers guaranteed.

In the campaign Howard used everything she could to attract more backers. From wallpapers and bookmarks to drawing requests. She also added some never before seen scenes to her existing stories.

The Last Halloween: Book 1 is actually an extension of Abby Howard’s previous campaign. Back in 2013 she asked Kickstarter to help her in her comic project, namely: “The Last Halloween”. Rewards included backer dedicated monsters, death scenes in the comic, and the reveal of authors “deepest, darkest secret” for only 3200 USD (in person only). 2 people decided to support her by such amount.

Grow Up, Tony Phillips

Let’s leave the dark lands created by Howard and go for some traditional trick-or-treating with Emily Hagins… or rather Tony Phillips – a protagonist of her movie. While knocking at different doors we’ll quickly notice that our companion is a man of unique personality. Luckily it won’t spoil our fun. It’s actually going to get even more interesting.

“Grow Up, Tony Phillips” is a movie about… growing up. Titular character, despite his advanced age, isn’t planning to leave his passions, which happen to be quite childish. That’s why on the Halloween evening he decides to play some tricks and collect a bunch of confectioneries.

Audiences enjoyed their time with the work by Hagins. Its simplicity, naturality and forwardness rarely seen in pictures on this topic, managed to reach their hearts.

Bring Halloween Back to NYC!

In 2012 Sandy Hurricane prevented New York’s Halloween Parade for the first time in festival’s 39 year long history. Damage done by the disaster also called the next year’s parade into question. That’s what made the organizers turn their heads towards Kickstarter. They wanted to collect 50 000 USD, which was the amount needed to cover the damages.

Backers have been offered tens of different rewards. These included small gadgets (like posters), tickets for accompanying events, best spots in the audience and parade’s performers doing their shows on backer organized parties. The most expensive option allowed the backer to design his or her own platform. Sadly, nobody decided to pay for this one, as it was 10 000 USD high.

Thankfully 2013’s parade has been saved. Another proof that crowdfunding can achieve incredible feats.
