Super Fantasy Brawl – Upcoming Arena Fighter by Mythic

Mythic is one of the most creative big players on Kickstarter board game market right now. They never hesitate to try out original ideas instead of pumping out sequels / seasons / expansions. Each year they surprise us with something fresh. While arena skirmish games are by no means a new idea, Mythic has never made one so far. While the genre might seem slightly repetitive, I feel like their take on it might be something worth checking out.

Mythical Minis

The studio is mostly known for their Joan of Arc miniatures game, famous for its scale and the huge dragon statue used during gameplay. Mythic followed their initial success with an unique, pulp novel inspired, co-op game called Solomon Kane as well as Wolfenstein-like Reichbusters: Projekt Vril – both crowdfunded last year. The company even got 2 of our 2018 Tentaccolade awards, both well deserved. But how is their latest project shaping up? Let’s take a look.

Coliseums and arenas are one of the oldest forms of entertainment. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that they also exist in many fantasy worlds. People of Fabulosa are a dystopian society, who can materialize everything they want thanks to their advanced magic. Boredom resulting from such an overabundance of goods has spawned a new sport, beloved by everyone: arena battles. Participating wizards summon great warrior tribes and heroes from various eras and pit them against each other in a series of tournaments.

Are You Entertained?

Super Fantasy Brawl begins with each player drafting 3 heroes. If you don’t like surprises and your friends don’t mind, it’s also allowed to choose whatever heroes everyone prefers. Every hero has his or her own set of 6 cards, which makes your deck of 18 unique cards. You begin by drawing 5 of these.

What’s the goal? Apart the obvious one with killing enough enemies, you can also gain Victory Points by completing displayed quests. Getting 5 points total means victory.

The gameplay divides into 3 phases. In Scoreboard Phase you check if you’ve completed any quests and get rewards for doing so. Activation Phase has you choose the cores and play your cards. These usually involve movement, attacks and special actions like pushing enemies onto traps. Finally, during the Upkeep Phase you discard your hand and draw a new one.

After killing enemies, champions can level up and turn into more powerful versions of themselves.

Mythic is open about Super Fantasy Brawl’s retail future. Most (if not all) of the Kickstarter content will land on store shelves in Q2 2020. Additionally: tons of new characters are supposed to be released regularly, and players will be able to customize their teams even more. They’re planning on supporting local communities and help in organizing tournaments. To learn more about how Super Fantasy Brawl plays, we’ll have to wait until June 23rd, when the Kickstarter campaign officially launches.
