Saber & Blood: an Alternative 17th Century Board Game

Few days ago we have covered Iron Harvest, a game set in an alternative version of 1920’s Europe. A well known setting with something unexpected added to the mix often feels refreshing and exciting. Just look at the Scythe board game from Kickstarter or TV shows like Westworld. A new product is about to join these titles in the next few weeks. What kind of mix are we receiving in Saber & Blood?

The Year 1665 Was a Strange Year…

Especially in the southeastern Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. The trails of burned villages and towns covered the once green lands like a grim charcoal drawing. Minds of the locals were just as grim. The country was being pillaged by warbands of Cossacks and Tatars.

Growing unrest resurrected the belief in ghosts, wraiths and witches. Some claimed to have seen entire flocks of dead, marching after leaving their own graves, along with werewolves and creatures whose names would make anyone cower in fear.

In the world of “Saber & Blood” the supernatural becomes reality. The game takes place in a setting made of historical XVIIth century mixied with bits of classic horror and beliefs straight from the slavic folklore.

Your Own Merry Party

Majority of the game takes place in a typical wooden tavern, where beer flows in gallons, just like the blood from the constant tussles. The tavern-looking board will serve as a stage for combat of two parties, each consisting of 3 characters.

One side is the Polish noble party led by a famous and accomplished boozer Jerzy Maria Opilski, along with two of his faithful companions. All three, apart from swift emptying of bottles of spirits, are also wonderful strategists. Player controlling this lot will be able to perform additional actions during his turn.

Second party is a group of Zaporozhye Cossacks with ataman Samuel the Black leading the bunch. These guys prefer to solve problems with brutal physical power. If you pick them, prepare to start as many brawls as possible.

If the campaign reaches higher stretch goals, the creators will add two more factions to the game. First one, called “The Deceived” consists of what looks like nobles awoken from their graves. Final group, “the Brotherhood of Faith”, represents forces of the Church.

Rules of the Brawl

Saber & Blood is a mix of board game and a card game. Each team has an unique deck of cards and completely different abilities. Battles are solved using fencing dice representing various stances and skills.

You control your team only through the cards. These let you perform specific actions. Additionally, each player has his or her own pool of action points. Not using all of these allows drawing additional cards in the following turn.

Ability cards drawn at the beginning of the game give bonus traits to your heroes and make each session more unique.

Straight from the Foundry

Saber & Blood was created by three game makers from Sulejówek, Poland. The 28 millimeter figurines were casted in their own foundry named Kazrak Games. Each of these is extra detailed (including things like single buttons), faithful to the history and sports a proper fencing pose. Apart from creating  figurines for their own games, the Kazrak guys also offer their services to other creators and organize metal casting workshops.

The campaign for the newest game by Peter, Lukasz and Mateusz will join Kickstarter in the next few weeks. We wish them achieving as many stretch goals as possible and keep waiting impatiently for the big launch.
