Icaion – Euro Board Game Saga Continues

The saga by Tabula Games launched last year with Mysthea and had already managed to spawn multiple projects including: board games, a pen & paper RPG and even a graphic novel. All of them tell tales from the same universe. The newest installment not only continues the plot but also can be merged with others.

Chronicles of Icaion

All stories take place on the planet of Icaion, a globe suffering from a mysterious calamity. A colossal crystal collided with it and changed everything from the land itself to all of the organisms populating it.

The story began with the last year’s Mysthea – an area control game about a bunch of adventurers exploring uncharted islands floating in the skies above the planet.

Then there was a short graphic novel released on the official website and its plot led to the next project called Volfyrion. A small card game told a prequel story and included a dragon miniature in one of the pledge options (for use with the past and future games). There also was a tabletop pen and paper RPG called Mysthea: Legends From the Borderlands crowdfunded in March.

Now yet another game is going to join the family and guessing from its current numbers on Kickstarter it’s likely to be the highest funded so far in the series.

A New Chapter

The story of Icaion feels more grim than its predecessors. This time your goal is to leave the safe area within the City’s walls and go for a journey to seek ancient artifacts. And while other seekers are ready to fight for every ancient scrap you’ve found, an even bigger danger wanders about – a colossal being infested with a deadly disease which is continuously spreading from its body to the surrounding environment.

Exploring and Harvesting

Each out of 2 to 5 players is leading a convoy equipped with high tech machines. These can not only harvest precious resources but also claim lands for your party. Sadly: the most valuable resource comes from the corrupted colossus. His crystals are worth a fortune but getting near him may cost you not only your money but also your life. Killing his spawns effectively is the key to success.

Exploring craters located on the borders of the board will grant new resources and upgrades for your machines.

The Fall

Players who own both Mysthea and Icaion will be able to merge the two and get a whole new game as a result. Mysthea: the Fall will tell a story about floating islands falling down to the surface due to a whole new catastrophe. The game serves as a closure to the entire franchise (at least for now, since the universe still has quite the potential). The idea sounds original and will add even more replayability.

Contrary to the previous installments “the Fall” is actually a co-op game, where you’ll have to join forces with other players and protect the City from hordes of approaching monsters.
