3 Upcoming Kickstarter Board Games – Sieges, Mountain Kings and Faraway Planets

Looks like this year is quite great when it comes to board game crowdfunding campaigns. There are tons of promising projects announced both for summer and for fall. Today we want to talk about 3 of these, starting with more news about a certain board game adaptation of a popular video game.

6: Siege – The Board Game – Summer

6: Siege is a tabletop adaptation of the popular Rainbow 6 series of books and video games. We reported that this game is in works some time ago but now more details have emerged. The board game version will be based on “Siege”, an online tactical shooter set in the very same universe as the rest of the series. The game is insanely popular and sports over 70 millions of registered players.

The board game adaptation was designed for 2 to 4 players and, like you could expect, is a competitive game with lots of strategizing. Designers promise a fast paced, asymmetric gameplay. Each player controls 5 characters: either attackers or defenders. Teams can be highly customized as different members can use different equipment and have access to different abilities. Also, each team has a unique objective that needs to be fulfilled to win. Alternatively, taking out all members of the opposing team is also an option.

Activation phases, that are a vital part of every turn, allow activating team members and performing actions from movement and combat to using gadgets of all sorts. Maps have lots of complexity, allow some forms of faster travel and feature destructible elements of the environment like walls that can be smashed with grenades.

Remember In the Hall of Mountain King? The game was funded on kickstarter in early 2019 and ended up having quite a positive reception. Now, the publisher responsible for the first game has announced a prequel game, made by a different designer team.

Fall of the Mountain King takes place before the events of the previous game and focuses on telling a story of a gnome invasion on the titular Mountain. As trolls you will be tasked with defending the place and bringing peace.

The game is standalone and focuses on action selection and area control mechanics. Players become troll leaders dead set on stopping the neverending waves of gnome enemies. Defeating them is rewarded with Victory Points, vital to win the game. Various Clans can help you in your fights, and aid you with their Champions, provided you have enough influence to control them.

Lost Empires: War for the New Sun – September

Kolossal Games is back with a brand new project. While it was already launched in May, the creators have decided  to postpone it a bit to improve the production and upgrade the game with new modes and some tweaks. The next campaign is planned to launch in September.

Lost Empires: War for the New Sun was designed by Brad Pye, whom you may recognize from Terrors of London. The action takes place in future on a faraway planet where four powerful factions vie for control over its vast continents. In this setting, the Earth is long gone and left in ruin. The faction that wins this war will become a ruler of the new home of humanity.

The basic version of the game is designed for 2 players and is quite fast paced. A single game can be completed in 30 minutes. The factions are asymmetric and have their own unique traits and powers. The game focuses on card based mechanics and each faction uses a different deck. When you control enough objectives you will be awarded with artifacts. These can be used to build a wormgate and whoever finishes it first, becomes the winner.
New campaign will add solo mode to the game along with a 3-4 player mode, 2v2 team battle and a choice of variants to customize your game with.
