3 amazing games, with themes that bring us to different worlds. No matter whether you prefer the 1920s USA, endless Japanese garden with Tori or just want to go to the far future, where robots wage a huge scale war – a little bit of escapism can feel quite good. The choice of which one you pick belongs to you.
Scarface 1920 – This Year
Welcome to 1920s Chicago! You have just arrived here and it just happens, nationwide prohibition was officially announced. That makes for some great news as only the criminal organizations will be able to supply all sorts of bars and city taverns from now on.
We didn’t have to wait long, as an all out mafia war has already begun. Shootings, broken glass, people being found dead all across the city…
In Scarface 1920 you play as one of the many gangster groups dreaming of taking over the entire city, and becoming the monopolist when it comes to selling illegal alcohol. Main mechanics include (obviously) area control and lots of deckbuilding. There will be many ways to help your career. From bribes to recruiting new and loyal talent, upgrading your HQ as well as making deals with local police to: fighting a lot when walking through all hostile districts.
The Last Mechs – Q3 This Year
It might have been long, but we finally have a proper big-scale game about giant mechs and we welcome it with open arms. The Last Mechs tells a story about a terrible war that ravaged humanity starting in the year 2200. Human made constructs have become too smart, and decided to rebel against their makers, which led to one of the most bloody events in history.
Nowadays, only a few settlements have managed to survive the apocalypse. All their locations are secret and highly protected.
The Last Mechs is a scenario based game playable for up to 4 players, with an optional solo mode. At first you create your party and go exploring various dungeons.
To help your exploration efforts, there’s a special comic book that you use along the journey. It’s supposed to come in handy on many occasions. Additionally all heroes have their own comics that describe their backstory and give some valuable story hints.
Going through dungeons rewards you with attributes which you can spend to develop your character to your and your group’s needs. There’s also plenty of bolts, cables and other “thrash” that might become incredibly important as you keep going. The more time you spend in the dangerous wastelands leaving your shelter, the more rewards you’ll get. You can use them later on healing wounds at the Doctor’s Office or spending your last penny in the local Canteen. Getting tattoos for attribute boosts is also available and can help a lot.
The One Hundred Torii: Diverging Paths – Q2 This Year
The One Hundred Torii was a small sized, indie card game that ended up really popular with Kickstarter backers as well as other types of board game players. Some were drawn to it because of how fun it used the whole tile placement mechanic. Others just by looking at its Japan-inspired artstyle considered getting it as a no brainer. Now, in the second quarter of 2021 a new expansion will be crowdfunded to make the basic game even more varied.
The original game awarded constructing a park with Toriis and walking through as many of them as possible. Interacting with other visitors always gave you some advantages.
Diverging Paths has many additions to the game, which make more choices available and everything seems less predictable. You will also be able to talk to 2 brand new characters who will also be visiting your beautiful garden.
