3 Upcoming Kickstarter Board Games – Brawls, Chaos and Faraway Stars

Today we want to look into board games coming to Kickstarter in March 2021 and later on. All 3 games we preview are related to already popular franchises: from successful board games to insanely popular video games.

Super Fantasy Brawl – Reprint and New Character – March

Super Fantasy Brawl had its first Kickstarter campaign launch back in June 2019 and it was quite successful. Thousands of backers have supported the project and the game was also popular in retail. It’s worth noting that Super Fantasy Brawl belongs to the “skirmish” tabletop game genre, and has managed to be one of the few such games that made it really big.

Super Fantasy Brawl takes place in the fantasy kingdom of Fabulosa, known for its insanely powerful magic and an advanced knowledge about using it. People of Fabulosa are able to create everything from almost nothing and shape the world to their taste on a whim. This led to huge changes in their society, the biggest probably being the end of all wars. Meanwhile, a certain sport has become really popular with citizens. It has powerful wizards competing in an arena and fighting to become the last one standing.

The game is fast paced and looks pretty amazing, which shouldn’t come as a surprise as Mythic Games has a long history of creating great minis and illustrations. The basic gameplay mode is 1v1 but there’s also a 2v2 ruleset allowing team play. Each match has 2 sides and every player controls 3 characters sporting unique skills and cards. Apart from moving through the arena and attacking, you can also complete quests and, after gaining a total of 5 Victory Points, you become the winner.

Super Fantasy Brawl is strategy heavy and includes little randomness, as there are no dice here. You get a deck where all 3 characters you control have their cards shuffled together.

So what is the new Kickstarter campaign going to be about? First of all it will allow backers to get the Kickstarter version of the game with all the content. It will also feature a brand new character that wasn’t available before and heroes who were available only through the previous campaign. According to Mythic, the project should launch sometime in March.

Stellaris: Legacy – Q1/Q2 2021

Now that’s a big name, especially if you’re a fan of 4X strategy video games. Stellaris, released back in 2016 is a deep and complex strategy set in a faraway galaxy. The game was created by Paradox Interactive, and was highly inspired by their grand strategy games like Europa Universalis and Crusader Kings.

The tabletop edition of Stellaris is coming to Kickstarter in the first half of the year. Like the original video game, you will be able to fully customize your alien race and pick its strengths and weaknesses one by one. Different powers will help with achieving different victory conditions. If you’re expecting an incredibly long game you might be surprised. A single session takes up to 2 hours. Fans of longer games shouldn’t be disappointed as it’s possible to continue where your previous session ended and play for another 2 hours and so on. Everything is designed and balanced to allow new players to join you no matter how many games have you played in your previously generated galaxy.

During the course of the game you will be exploring new planets, using them to establish bases and gather resources, expand your empire, work on diplomacy and conquer territories owned by other players to become the most important figure in the galaxy. All decisions will be made simultaneously so you won’t need to wait for others to finish their turns.

S.J. Macdonald, whom many of you will likely recognize from his work on the “West Kingdom” series, has a new project in the works planned for a 2021 Kickstarter launch. The game, called Circadians: Chaos Order tells a story of an ancient planet called Ryh. Fans of Garphill Games likely know this world already from Circadians: First Light, but this game will take place after the events we’ve been through in FL.

Players take on the role of Circadians, a selection of talented individuals from Earth, tasked with space exploration. In the previous game they have stumbled upon Ryh and tried to learn about the planet while working on good relations with the local population. In Chaos Order the capital gets destroyed by mysterious tremors and 6 powerful structures get activated. Players will have to find what is happening here and take control of the six relics.

The game is designed for 2 to 5 players and there are 6 different, asymmetric factions to choose from. Each of them has its own victory conditions, leaders and many other traits that set them apart.
