Painting minis is one of the best aspects of war and board games. Making the figurines more personalized and adjusted to your taste results in an addictive feeling of satisfaction. Playing games with them later is even better.
There are some companies who can paint your minis for money but they’re all wildly expensive. The painted sets often multiply the original price of the game. And let’s not forget about Facebook scammers who offer their painting services, get your minis through mail and… disappear. Let’s be honest, if you have some free time and at least a little bit of curiosity – learning to paint minis is worth it!
Can crowdfunding websites help you? The sheer amount of accessories for hobby painters on Kickstarter is astonishing: from acrylic paints to brushes and special handles. Today we’ll take a look at our favourite campaigns. Maybe you’ll find something to help you start the hobby or improve your technique?
SCALECOLOR ARTIST Smooth Acrylic Paints
Highest funded campaign of all mini painting related projects. They guys from SCALE75 have already crowdfunded their paintable busts and minis, but doing so with one of their paint sets was a fresh idea.
Scalecolor Artist Smooth Acrylic Paints were offered in 48 different colors and various combinations of these. The colors are intensive, the texture has high consistency and they work with all materials that modern minis and models are made of.
Backers could choose between smaller sets of 6 paint tubes (“Skin Tones”, “Shades of Grey” etc.), another set of 12 colors where you could specify each of them, and a special deluxe box with whopping 48 colors and a pallette, watercolor brush pen, acrylic thinner and some other tools as well. There were also some mass pledge options for retailers.

Nocturna Models: N-Paint Acrylic Colors and Fantasy Figures
Similar case to the one above. A company that has so far crowdfunded paintable minis, decides to start selling paints and ends up doing quite well. Nocturna Models campaign was a special idea created for the Nocurna’s anniversary.
Backers could choose between 67 colors including high intensity mattes, high pigmented inks, metallic colors and others – all coming in 18 ml containers. Each paint set could be ordered with an additional miniature of your choice. Higher pledges included bonus paints and more busts/minis to use them on.
Artis Opus – Series S: Brush Set

All tools by Artis Opus look and feel sleek and balanced – perfect for covering all the tiny details on orcs, wyverns and giant Cthulhu from CMON’s new game. The hair used to created these brushes comes from kolinsky sable and is famous for its exceptional quality.
Each set was priced at £45 with some optional add-ons. These included more brushes, detailed 55mm miniatures to paint, stylish boxes made from the wood of your choice and more. If you’ve missed the campaign, there’s still a chance of some future ones and Artis Opus has its own online store as well.
RGG 360°
A really useful tool that makes painting so much easier. You attach your mini to the top, covered by a custom made, highly reusable putty. The handle is ergonomic and easy to hold. The miniature attached to the top can be rotated using your thumb, which lets you access every inch of your space marine and avoid touching it with your hands. The RGG 360° tool supports all sizes of miniatures up to 55mm. The pricing was also great. You could get the device just for €10 and receive a supply of putty along with it.
There were some additional tools offered in certain pledges during the RGG 360° campaign. These included high quality brushes and the previous product designed by the very same people – a wet palette painter.
Table of Creation
Designed by one of the biggest players, when it comes to board game tables on Kickstarter. While not a KS campaign itself, we believe it’s still worth mentioning. Especially if you’re looking for a bigger solution that could fully cater to your hobby crafting and painting needs.
The Table of Creation is highly customizable so you can adjust it to your taste. You can start with a single desk unit, then attach more desks to it, add corner units or even create some combination of both. You store your tools and paints in special storage units. Their amount is up to you. It’s also possible to attach a protective mat to your desk. It can either be a scale to help you paint or something more game / your hobby related.
Additional features you can add to the table include big and small supply organizers, lower units to place below the desk and additional storage racks.
