Edge of Darkness – Board Game Veterans Revisit Kickstarter

Aegis – a city of plots, cunning and never-ending politicking. Four powerful guilds exert power over its territory and without wasting a single day (or night) wage an endless war over controlling the place. Recently The Anointed,  The Gilded Leaves, The Carnival of Shadows and The Fede Cartel have one more thing to worry about. Something dark and evil is about to teach them that their little catfight was nothing but a trifle. The Blight draws near.

Boardgame Legends Join the Fray Once Again

“Edge of Darkness” is the latest boardgame by Alderac Entertainment group. The publishers of “7th Sea” collectible card game and incredibly popular “Legend of the Five Rings” franchise have over two decades of industry experience. Their previous Kickstarter project called “Thunderstone Quest” managed to collect over half a million dollars and was a smash hit. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that they’re coming back to platform. Their latest offering is once more a “card crafting board game” but the formula got refined yet again.

City of Intrigue and Darkness

The game is set in a city where four main powers fight each other while combating a bigger, looming threat. At times they have to join powers, while still doing all they can to maintain position within town’s ranks. Blight is a dark force that knows no mercy and consumes everyone and everything on its way. The guild who manages to defeat it will without doubt gain glory and fame helpful in taking most of the Aegis for themselves.

What’s in the Box

So what do you get in the box? The game consists of a number of elements that represent the entire conflict in Aegis. There’s a deck of two-sided cards shared among all players. The cards themselves are constructed in a way that allows wide customization and so called “card crafting”. You can assemble cards with transparent elements into entirely new ones.

Apart from the deck, there’s also a set of boards, figurines, tokens and a plastic “threat tower”. After playing certain cards you add little “threat cubes” to the tower, which in turn dictates all the dangers that guilds have to take on.

A Look Into the Rules of “Edge of Darkness”

The game is aimed at 2 to 4 players. Each of them takes control over one of the guilds. Their influence over the city is represented by a number called “reputation”. The gameplay consists of sending “agents” to certain locations who in turn generate useful resources empowering the guild. During the course of the game players will fight the Blight. Their successes and failures change said reputation score and in the end decide who is the winner. There are many roads to victory and the game itself consists of various modules making each session unique.

Early Success

Even though the campaign started only a few days ago, the creators of the “Edge of Darkness” managed to reach their goal and cross it by a huge margin. Additional stretch goals are being continuously added and include new location cards, figurines, token holders and alternative play rules. The campaign is set to finish on march 24th.
