Terraforming Mars got insanely popular right after the release. Now it’s almost impossible not to stumble upon people playing it, whenever I visit a board game cafe or any other tabletop gaming related space.
Players from all over the world fell in love with TM and the arrival of numerous expansions was obvious. First: the maps of Hellas and Elysium have appeared. Next we could enrich the game with Venus, Prelude and Colonies. Now It’s time for Turmoil – the first expansion funded through Kickstarter. And like all others: it was met with huge success.
Martian Politics
Turmoil introduces a new element to the gameplay of Terraforming Mars – a fight for influence over the whole martian society. According to the publisher, the expansion is not only the biggest one, but also the most strategic addition ever released under the Terraforming Mars brand. It’s supposed to be the most advanced game variant, making the gameplay reach a whole new level of complexity.
In Turmoil we will get access to 5 new corporations and 16 project cards that can be added to ones from the core box (or other expansions). The rest of the box is filled with completely new elements, all linked to the new mechanics. These include:
- 31 global event cards and a new board hosting these
- 6 policy cards
- terraforming committee board
- 35 delegate meeples (7 for each of the 5 colors)
- 14 neutral delegate meeples

Upgrades and Promos
There’s even more new stuff coming. The Kickstarter edition is going to include dual layer player boards! The original flat ones were the weakest part of Terraforming Mars, as they often led to markers being moved to wrong numbers and could potentially ruin a game if someone was not careful enough. Many fans will be happy knowing, that this part of their favourite game got fixed.
Each day the campaign will bring new promo elements like cards. So far we’ve seen: 1 new corporation called Mons Insurance, 2 new projects and an additional global event. The only way to get these is to back the Kickstarter version, although publishers mention that the cards might become available later at events etc.

The Kickstarter campaign will last until May 2nd. Turmoil is available for $34. If you still don’t have the core game, you can get it along the latest expansion for $79. The set of all 5 Terraforming Mars expansions with the core game is also up for grabs. Shipment is planned for November 2019.
About Terraforming Mars
Terraforming Mars is a game based around cards. The basic version includes over 200 of these, and each of them is different! The players are tasked with increasing the temperature, water and oxygen levels to make the red planet habitable and properly irrigated. They have plenty of scoring options available, but need to adjust their strategy to the situation on a hex based board and cards, which they draft each round. The game got plenty of awards and is currently ranked 4 at BGG’s top list.
