5 Kickstarter Board Games Best For a Christmas Gift

Holidays are the time of gifts. Both given to others and to your own self. Isn’t it the best time to gift a board game to a geek you know? Because Christmas is when you can go a little crazy and spend more money than usual.

Zombicide

Zombicide. Trademarks and visuals belong to their rightful owners.

Who doesn’t like zombies? Looking at the number of movies, books, graphic novels and all sorts of games: you can say that this topic is not only popular but also quite charming. Zombies fit every era and every setting. That’s why the only right choice here is Zombicide! Do you or a person you want to gift like fantasy worlds? Zombicide: Black Plague is here for you! Prefer Warhammer and beating up orcs? Pick Zombicide: Green Horde. Love space? Zombicide family of games has something for you as well. Each edition is oozing atmosphere. Beautiful miniatures flood the board, all ready to crush the heroes with their mass. Additionally: the rules are really simple, so even the older kids will enjoy playing with you and smashing waves of zombies together.

Scythe

Scythe. Trademarks and visuals belong to their rightful owners.

Here’s a beautiful and complex game set in its own universe called 1920+. Looking at the factions you’ll quickly notice what group does each of them represent. And going back to the topic of gifts: who is this game for? Whoever thinks Scythe is filled with epic combat is mistaken. Instead Scythe is a fantastic euro style game with beautiful visuals and often comedic story events. Beautiful minis, resources and great illustrations create an unique atmosphere together. Each time we start playing we can feel the pressure from other players, there’s lots of strategizing of how you develop your faction and place your units. Not having this one on your shelf should be against the law.

Cthulhu Wars

Cthulhu Wars. Trademarks and visuals belong to their rightful owners.

Cthulhu mythology can easily be called a part of modern pop culture canon. No matter where you look, you’ll find Lovecraft or people inspired by him. Mysterious rituals, occultists, blasphemous books and unimaginable beings out of this world have been fascinating people from all over the world for decades. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that there’s more and more games starring the Great Old One. You can pick whichever you like: small , big, short, long, family, heavy, funny or scary. Cthulhu Wars is one of the best choices here. It has huge miniatures and lots of area control mechanics. It also has one of the ugliest board we’ve ever seen. Luckily beautiful minis and great gameplay (inspired by Chaos in the Old World) make you quickly forget about that and have tons upon tons of fun.

Conan

Conan. Trademarks and visuals belong to their rightful owners.

I bet some of you wanted to be Conan the Barbarian at some point in your younger lives. Not everyone knows though, that it was at the very same time when Lovecraft was building his mythos, when Howard created his Hyborian Era with its key character called Conan. There were movies, comics, cartoons and first and foremost: stories and novels. The entire universe kept being developed by whole generations of writers. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that somebody has finally thought about a Kickstarter board game devoted to the adventures of the greatest barbarian of all time: Conan the Cimmerian! While one player takes the role of a villain, others play as Conan and his allies. Scenarios allow us to experience unique, movie-like adventures. The plot is based on the original stories, so movie fans might be surprised by some events and twists.

Brass

Brass Birmingham. Trademarks and visuals belong to their rightful owners.

Some say that older games have zero chances with the newer ones. Especially when it comes to euros without a ton of plastic inside. This very example though shows that not every game has to be forgotten by players when it gets older. Sometimes all you need are some visual tweaks, upgraded rules and you have a hit on your hands again. Brass is one of the games where we feel glued to the table while competing with each other like there’s no tomorrow. On one hand the game works wonderfully when it comes to mechanics and you need to think a lot if you want to score points and outsmart others. On the other hand its beautiful: from its two sided board to stylish tokens. Brass is easily a must have, and a shining star in the collection of every board game fanatic.
