3 Upcoming Kickstarter Board Games – Greeks, Vikings and Cthulhu in Australia

Let’s close another week with a look at games coming to Kickstarter during the rest of summer 2020. Today we have 3 previews including 2 interesting debuts and a new expansion to AuZtralia by Martin Wallace. Enjoy!

Kleos – July 21st

Kleos takes place in the universe of ancient Greek mythology. The story borrows a lot from the myths, but adds its own spin on them. The titular Kleos is a new city state that lacks its own patron god. That makes Zeus announce a five days long contest, and the winner will become the sole deity of that region.

Kleos was designed for 2 to 5 players and a single game takes up to 2 hours. The winning condition is simple. During the course of the game you will be gaining glory and whoever ends up with the most becomes victorious. Glory can be amassed through a variety of ways. The most obvious way is area control by holding certain areas on the map for as long as possible. Since you’ll likely by fighting for them it’s good to know that successful combat also awards glory. There are even more ways to collect it such as recruiting mythical heroes and monsters to join your cause.

As you’ll be playing as specific olympian gods, the player powers are asymmetric. You can choose between Ares, Athena, Dionysus, Artemis, and Hermes.

Northgard: Uncharted Lands – July 23rd

“Northgard” may sound familiar for some of you, especially if you’re into video gaming. The original game got plenty of good reviews, some even calling it “The Settlers of 21st century”. Recently more and more successful video games are being adapted into board games. Looks like it’s high time for Northgard to join them.

Like Kleos, Northgard: Uncharted Lands is a strategy with heavy emphasis on territory control. It’s a 4X game merged with a deck building card game. Despite what you may expect from most 4X titles, this one is quite fast paced and usually lasts up to 20 minutes per player. Over the course of the game you’ll have to improve your deck and use it smartly to conquer territories, crush your enemies, get your hands on resources and develop your viking clan. The game has a modular board made of square tiles, which adds tons upon tons of replay value.

AuZtralia: Revenge of the Old Ones – 2020

AuZtralia by Martin Wallace is a well-received board game with one of the craziest settings you can find in a strategy game. In 1930s Earth got invaded by monsters known from Cthulhu mythos. Northern hemisphere was ruined and the continent of Australia is one of the last safe havens of humanity. Not for too long though, as the evil powers are starting to head there and won’t back off easily. As players you have to build infrastructure, collect resources and do everything to be ready when the tentacled enemy strikes.

The new expansion called Revenge of the Old Ones takes place in 1932 in a so-called “new world”. As players you’ll have to explore the place that seems to contain the very lair, that all the monsters swarm from. Gameplay wise the expansion adds mechanics for playable Cthulhu faction, which also works as the 5th player expansion.
