A new batch of upcoming board game previews is up! We talk about a certain fighting game that many players have loved since the 90s. We’re also discussing a new dice heavy game about cultists competing for power. And there’s a third one, and that might be a happy surprise for fans of Ryan Laukat. Enjoy!
Cult of the Deep – February 2nd
Plenty of Kickstarter funded board games have a target audience of groups of 2-4 players, sometimes with a solo mode included. Games with bigger player counts are scarce and let’s be honest: when you really get into tabletop gaming, and addict your friends to it: 4 player games are simply not enough.
Luckily, a certain really promising project is coming our way and apart from being a 4-8 player game it has a fantastic theme and a gameplay to go with it.
Cult of the Deep tells a story about a certain cult. Each player takes on the role of a member who wants to help the group to rise in power. Depending on your role you will be aiming towards different goals that sometimes clash with these other players have (or require cooperation). Completing various rituals and controlling mythical creatures will grant you power that you’ve never dreamt of.
The gameplay in Cult of the Deep features cards and most importantly: 37 dice. The latter are the most vital component here. Cardboard Altar Boards are located in the very center of the playing area and that’s where you place the dice to continue and complete rituals.
One of the players is declared The High Priest while others get unique roles that stay secret. The point of these are the equally secret winning conditions, usually involving defeating specific players or going as far as killing everyone including yourself. Additionally, apart from roles, you get different classes that determine your attributes.
During gameplay players roll their dice and use them to empower the rituals on the Altar Boards. Each contribution is rewarded with power, but when a player completes the entire ritual they become a Keeper, which is rewarded with even more occult powers.
Insane enough? Well keep reading. After dying… you will still keep on playing as a wraith. This makes you lose some of the options you had when you were alive, but you get the ability to haunt other players’ dice and manipulate them to either help or destroy their strategy.
During gameplay players roll their dice and use them to perform activities from healing and empowering their altars to killing or resurrecting other faction leaders. Insane enough? Well keep reading. After dying… you will still keep on playing as a ghost, with less options at your disposal.

Mortal Kombat X: The Miniatures Game – Q1 or Q2 2021
After 2018’s Street Fighter The Miniatures Game, and many other board games trying to create a tabletop version of fighting video games, we finally have something special coming here. Mortal Kombat X: The Miniatures Game by Jasco Games will hit Kickstarter sometime between Spring and Summer this year.
MK is probably the best known fighting game of all time, even though some fans of the genre might argue about its simplistic gameplay. Still: it managed to get a colossal fan following and many additions to the franchise like toys or movies. The newest film is coming this year and might have been the reason why this game is being created now.
The game can be played in a group of 2 to 6 players. Everyone picks a character and their related cards. Lot’s of fan favourites are available from Sub-Zero and Scorpion to Jade and Baraka.
All of the combat takes place on the board, so movement is vital for victory. Additional “Boss Mode” allows co-op gameplay against more powerful opponent(s). Also: if you have the Street Fighter Miniatures Game you can mix them both together. Will fatalities be here? Who knows but they certainly exist in the newest theatrical movie’s trailers.
Now or Never – Sometime in 2021
Ryan Laukat is back and we’re as happy as many of you. His newest project is called Now or Never and if you’re his fan, you probably figured out that it’s the third part in the (now) trilogy including Above and Below and Near and Far.
Now or Never will be a city building game that continues the story known from the finale of the second game. The world, and the city of Monument were attacked by alien life forms never before seen on the planet. And all of them came because of a colossal meteorite striking the ground. Some time has passed, and aliens seem to be weakening a lot. Your goal will be to reclaim Monument, rebuild the entire settlement with other players and fend off the remains of enemy forces.
All of that, especially exploration, is story heavy and requires reading certain passages from the adventure book. Thanks to that you will be able to meet helpful characters, challenge bizarre puzzles or face enemies who may end your adventure quicker than you expect.
The game is designed for 1 to 4 players and everyone picks an asymmetrical character with their own unique feats. There wasn’t much info released regarding whether this one is a Kickstarter campaign or not, but it’s still newsworthy enough and we cannot wait to get our hands on this game.
