3 Upcoming Board Games From Kickstarter – Monster Hunting, Mars and More

2021 looks like a great year for unexpected returns. Publishers we like, keep on announcing new projects like there’s no tomorrow.

Today we’ll talk about a newly announced game by Reggie Games, Roxley Games and an unexpected project set in the Terraforming Mars universe.

Primal: The Awakening – January 19th

Reggie Games has a reputation for creating one of the best MOBA inspired tabletop games. Looks like this year they want to keep on doing their great job and launch a second campaign, this time for a game called Primal: The Awakening.

Primal: The Awakening feels like it was inspired by big scale hunting games like the popular Monster Hunter video game franchise. The game, like expected, sports tons of amazingly looking monster miniatures. They’re greatly designed and we wouldn’t mind using them in our D&D sessions.

The gameplay focuses on card driven combat and you’re able to customize your characters to your taste thanks to crafting and other mechanics. Primal: The Awakening itself is designed for 1 to 4 players and sports a pretty huge campaign mode, which can be played over many sessions with your own group (or solo).

The action takes place in the dangerously violent world of Thyrea, where well trained hunters defend people against colossal dragons and other monsters. The key to victory is to smartly create your team, gear up and tackle the monsters with a strategy in mind. We will tell you more about this game when it launches on January 19th.

Radlands – January 26th

Each time Roxley Games announces a new project we get hyped to no end. And this time was by no means different. Radlands designed by Daniel Piechnick and illustrated by Manny Trembley, Damien Mammoliti and Gavan Brown looks incredible (at least in the art department). The whole thing feels like Mad Max mixed with a heavy dose of not necessarily legal substances.

Radlands is a competitive 2 player card game and the action takes place during a certain apocalypse. Each of you becomes a leader of a group of survivors and has to do all they can to protect well springs located in their settlements. The game does a lot with card combos and synergy mechanics providing surprisingly deep gameplay experience.

Radlands will come in a magnetically locked box with a fantastic cover art. We’re expecting the campaign to launch on January 26th. Below you can check out the teaser video for the project.

Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition – February 2021

Another week brings another Terraforming Mars related announcement. We’ve recently reported about a dice based version being designed and apparently there is yet another project in the works. FryxGames plans on launching its Kickstarter campaign as soon as February. So what will we get this time?

Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition is a stand alone game for 1-4 players with surprisingly quick game length somewhere between 45 and 60 minutes. That’s almost twice if not thrice shorter than in the original game.

The core gameplay is still about creating a perfect engine and dominating other corporations in the mission of terraforming the red planet. Authors mentioned that the game will consist only of cards this time. We’re guessing that there will be no board and resource markers. Also the game will get 200 completely new and much prettier illustrations this time.
