Under the Spotlight: Fierce Women of the Forest

People have always found magic in the wild places of the world. Forests especially hold a deliciously dangerous allure in the human psyche where we populate them with all manner of supernatural spirits. Take a walk in an old growth forest, and it’s easy to imagine there is something just out of sight in that shadowy green space. Something equal parts ferocious and mischievous, embodying the rough beauty of the natural world. Traits that we, at least on a subconscious level, wish filled more of our lives. And despite our increasingly urban life-styles, this longing never quite goes away.

For those days when you can’t escape to the woods, Wonders’ Drop Studio is bringing you a series of primordial STL sculptures that can help ease the call of the wild. At least for a while.

Their latest project, The Forest Creatures V2, consists of 7 meticulously sculpted fey. First up are the Harpy Sisters. The detail on these, as on all of the miniatures in this collection, is incredible. Feathers are difficult to get right in 3D sculpting, but they nailed it with this pair. And take note of the curved lines on each. The way the hair and wings drape and flow create organic poses that are full of life, whether the sister is in quiet contemplation or poised and ready to fly.

There are also a pair of fauns bringing with them a menagerie of companions, both animal and vegetable. As you can see in the Kickstarter images above, Wonders’ Drop created these STLs with every type of hobbyist in mind. For collectors and painters who just want something beautiful on their shelves at home, you can print these sculpts in 1:12 or 1:24 scale. Perfectly large enough for display purposes. Or maybe you want a tiefling druid figure for your D&D game that stands out on the tabletop. The 1:48 scale will all but guarantee that your PC is the envy of every other player in your group.

But Wonders’ Drop isn’t afraid to go big with their creatures, either. Check out that griffin coming in at a monster 305mm. At that size, it’s less a miniature and more like a book stop. And I just have to take a second to talk about that centaur. It is possibly the most dynamic figure I’ve ever seen. That lean, the hair, the fury in the face; it’s amazing. You can almost hear the shouted command to “Charge!” So good. *Chef’s kiss*

Being an STL campaign, pledge levels are very affordable. $20 gets you all 7 sculpts at 1:24 scale, or you can get every version for around $37. And honestly, at that price why wouldn’t you? Also, the campaign has already reached its funding goal and unlocked a particularly adorable stretch goal so no need to worry about a disappointment and heartbreak at the campaigns end. Speaking of, the campaign goes until June 4. Plenty of time for you to find some new shelf space.
