Locky – Evolving the Revolving

Even though we live in the digital era, where millions of dollars are spent daily to guarantee the security of our online data, regular door locks and keys are still evolving. A lot.

First locks were made in Assyria. Egyptians invented pin locks opened with keys. Locks were used by the vikings and ancient Romans (who also wore keys as jewelry). Middle ages brought us locks made of metal and XIX and XX century developed what we’re using right now.

So what is digital era going to add to this millenia old invention? There were some projects involving locks and keys introduced to Kickstarter over past few years years. These focused on either promoting smart locks or a key finders. Locky – a new project that is about to debut on KS this Tuesday, will attempt to combine them both and make good old keys evolve yet another bit.

A Step Forward

Locky works as a modern addition to a regular, everyday key and almost all imaginable shapes are compatible. It consists of two components, the first being a sleek looking cover, with a layer of electronics underneath. The second component of Locky is actually a paired mobile app (iOS and Android versions available) that communicates with the cover via Bluetooth. The device doesn’t require an internet connection to work.

After attaching Locky to your key and pairing it with your phone (which takes up to 2-3 minutes), the application will track the circular movements of your key. Thanks to that, the app will let you know, if you remembered to close or lock the door.

Second functionality comes from the included proximity sensor. App will inform you where the key is located and lead you to it.

Using Locky

While the description above may sound simple, the amount of possible usages is massive.

People who keep wondering if they actually locked the door while leaving, can finally feel at peace. App not only tells you about the current state of the lock, but also tracks every single locking and unlocking. That results in a history log, that you can view anytime on your phone’s screen.

Apart from calming some users down, Locky can be a great burglary prevention. According to the data quoted by the creators, a third of home burglaries in the US is a result of the front door remaining open. A small notification, sent after you left your home, could save you ages of frustration.

Finally: keys, just like many smaller objects, like to get lost just when you need them most. Locky’s app is equipped with a tracker that will aid you in finding your key. The app uses a pulsating circle, that gets bigger and greener, the closer you are to your keys. With that, finding them will be trivial (and kind of fun).

Locky also simply looks good, and offers a stylish, minimalist cover that will safeguard your keys from any sort of damage.

The Campaign

The campaign is scheduled for launch on August 28th and the product looks, like it could finally be a simple home security solution, that IoT creators have been striving for. Locky makes the classic door opener take another step forward. It’s tiny, unhackable and at the same time offers the key finder functionality, you’d usually have to get from a separate device.
