August’s Upcoming Board Game Kickstarters – Shovels, Lieges and Necromancy

Today we’ll show you 3 tabletop games coming to Kickstarter in the next two weeks. Enjoy!

Shovel Knight: Dungeon Duels – August 6th

The original Shovel Knight video game holds a special place in my heart. It’s a love letter to old NES platformers with an insane amount of high quality content. The game was funded through Kickstarter back in 2013 and released on most major platforms. Next week a new Shovel Knight related campaign is about to launch. This time: it’ll be a board game inspired by the adventures of the one and only shovel wielding, metal covered hero.

Tabletop version of Shovel Knight is a competitive dungeon crawler made for up to 4 players. Everyone tries their best at defeating monsters and collecting their treasures. One of the main mechanics taken from the original game is losing half of your money on death. This makes pushing other players onto traps really tempting (regular combat is possible only with monsters).

The board is made of strips of cardboard, that simulate moving forward in a manner similar to side-scrolling games. After traversing the entire dungeon, players will fight a boss. Each villain sports his own deck randomizing the entire battle. Shovel Knight: Dungeon Duels looks brutal and quite innovative so far. There will be at least 2 different editions offered during the campaign: a 2D one (with standees) and a 3D one (with minis).

After the Empire – August 13th

After the Empire. Trademarks and visuals belong to their rightful owners.

A worker placement game, that will make you and other players try your best as medieval lieges, ruling over their own lands. After the Empire looks like a highly competitive game, even though wars among players are not a part of it (at least not in the core ruleset). A majority of gameplay is related to assigning workers to a variety of actions available each turn. You will be able to: gather various resources, expand your capital and gain additional units to your existing pool.

Each season is spiced up by invaders, who come in waves and attack the richest players. Countering them and avoiding getting robbed is vital, as whoever ends up with the biggest fortune by the end – wins.

After the Empire is shaping up as a historically accurate and heavy take on economic games. If the prototype photos on BGG are in any way close to the final product – the game is also going to be a looker – with its 3D walls, towers and high quality illustrations.

Rise of the Necromancers: Dawn & Demons – August 13th

Rise of the Necromancers. Trademarks and visuals belong to their rightful owners.

The Rise of the Necromancers is coming back to Kickstarter after 2 years. The game explores the theme of one of the most popular (and evil) RPG classes. Each player starts as a young necromancer learning the basics of their evil craft. As turns go by you graduate, gain more forbidden knowledge and finally get an apprentice of your own. The Rise of the Necromancers is first and foremost an area control game. Players create their own, risen armies and proceed to conquering various nearby territories. There’s also a bit of dungeon crawling included.

Dawn & Demons expansion adds many new elements to the original game. The titular demons are easily the biggest change. You can sacrifice your apprentice to gain a demon miniature, and it can be fully controlled. This allows players to have 2 characters at once, and do much more things at the same time. New modes are going to be introduced as well, adding co-op and solo variants to the game.
