Let us show you 3 currently running Kickstarter campaigns we really love. Without further ado… let’s go!
Colorful capes, scheming villains, powers out of this world and spectacular battles with huge stakes. Superhero stories have been fascinating people for over 100 years. Games about these are getting more and more popular, and that also includes titles released on Kickstarter. Recently White Wizard Games, known especially for their cult status game Star Realms, has picked up a 2019 game called Kapow! to rework and republish it. The new release includes not one but two games called “KAPOW! Volume 1” and “KAPOW! Volume 2”.
The new KAPOW! games are stand alone but can be mixed together for even more heroes and content. The gameplay is all about fighting your archenemy. One player takes on the role of a hero and the other becomes a villain. There are also variants allowing more people to play together, but they require having both volumes of the game. Every character has their own set of dice, some of which allow customization and picking their faces (similarly to Dice Forge). This adds much more control over randomness and lets you customize your hero to match your preferred playstyle.
Both volumes of KAPOW! look fantastic with their colorful comic book like illustrations and an immense amount of charm. Each player gets their own screen, a board and a “superboard” describing stats and abilities available to his hero.
Rune (Reprint & New Micro-Expansion)
Rune can easily be classified as a smaller game, but it’s by no means a forgettable filler. Having played the original release we can safely say that it’s addictive as hell. With gameplay length of around 15 minutes, it works fine as both a filler game as well as something played in many successive matches.
In Rune players compete to be the first wizard to summon a being known as Zemilio, which happens to have the same (nick)name as the creator of the game.
Cards with sets of runic stones are the central component of the game. Each player starts with 3 of them and 3 meeples of their colour. Next each turn players place one card on the table and draw another one afterwards. You can place cards partially on other cards as long as the runes match perfectly. When you decide to place a meeple you take control of the stone it’s on and all other rune stones of the same colour. Each colour grants a different number of points at the end of the game.
The new campaign not only allows Kickstarter backers to get the game again but also order the new expansion and add-ons. They add the possibility to play the game with 3 or even 4 players, which shakes things up quite a lot. They also allow you to do new things like drawing cards at the beginning of the turn for a price or getting adepts who’ll help you with your quest.
Escape the Dark Sector – Expand the Universe
Another great campaign running right now, and made by people who have some well funded and incredibly creative board game projects known well by many Kickstarter backers. Escape the Dark Castle was the first series of atmospheric, black and white adventure games with lots of depth and intriguing story. Escape the Dark Sector is a sequel, and right now it’s getting not one… but 4 expansions funded through KS.
Escape the Dark Sector takes place in a sci-fi setting where you and your fellow adventurers cooperate to, as the title suggests, escape from a huge space station.
Adventures are randomized to boost the replayability factor. Crewmen you can play as have different stats, can get new gear, expand their abilities to brave various hazards that the game throws at them. Everything comes with a heavy coating of great storyline and old school black and white illustrations that have that unique 80-90s sci-fi magazine feeling. Combat is based on dice rolls and each adventure ends with a boss fight.
New content includes three mission packs, each including new adventure chapters, dice, enemies and bosses. Backers can also get their hands on the stylish collector’s box to store all of the content together.
